Boland Cellar Paarl is a company well known for the quality and well-priced wines they have been offering ever since their formation in 1941. The company belongs to more than 50 owner growers and the wines are made by a talented team of winemakers with a sure feel for the terroir in which they work. The company is particularly well known for its award winning Chenins—6 of them—to which has now been added a Chenin MCC, one of few in the country and what a cracker it is. Subtle and beguiling from the first yeasty brioche notes on the nose, the generous mousse and never ending bead, this is one to watch. Well priced at R169 at the cellar or on line, the citrus notes and fresh exuberance of the wine make it a perfect aperitif or heaven with grilled prawns.

In addition to this new wine Boland are celebrating emerging into a new era with a sparkling new look to their labels making them even more fresh and appealing, bound to stand out on a shelf. The ranges here also offer something for most tastes and pockets with the Reserve Cab Sav and Wooded Chardonnay particularly superb. My favourite is the Chenin Sur Lie, rich and satisfying.
