On this Women’s Day it is only fitting to pay tribute to the women of the world who often are considered in patriarchal societies as followers. It suits men to have it so, so much easier. But that is not true and I do not believe that women are the equal of men—they are often better—much.

Kerry Kilpin, Catherine Schulze and Elunda Basson

The oldest registered wine estate in the Cape, Steenberg in Constantia is beautifully situated with the Steenberg Mountains as a backdrop and the whole of the Constantia Valley before you. Another good reason to visit there is their two excellent restaurants, Tryn and Bistro 1682, named for the year in which Steenberg was granted as a farm to Catharina Ustings Ras, a German immigrant to the Cape. Another formidable string to their bow is the fabulous wines Stenberg is noted for all over the world. Last but by no means least is the luxurious Hotel and Spa to which guests from all over the world used to flock to before the you know what hit the fan.

All this successful hive of activity is under the firm thumbs of some superb women—helped by men—isn’t that a nice switch?

The elegant tasting room

The winemaking is controlled by Elunda Basson, one of the very best winemakers we have bar none. She was for many years the driving force behind the superb bubblies at J C Le Roux and is now working her magic at Steenberg.

The terrace at Tryn

The kitchens of their restaurants  are –both of them!—are firmly controlled by Kerry Kilpin who can tell you a thing about cooking—nothing so precious you cannot  eat it, with a blob here and a blob there—just great, easy to eat fabulous nosh.

Luxury at Steenberg Hotel

The absolutely superb Hotel and Spa are controlled by Catherine Schulze, a woman who steers calmly and focussed keeping things ticking over as they should be. They often run specials so have a look at them

Steenberg will be running various projects to celebrate Women’s Month so get on to their website and take part. The month will end with a fabulous dinner at Tryn on August 26th.
