The wine

I hate to tell you, but I seldom look at the vintage of the white wine I am drinking. A friend brought a Diemersdal Sauvignon Blanc to the house for supper which I found totally delicious—fresh as a newborn day, very upfront with plenty of fruit to make you sit up and take notice. Turns out it is a 2022 from this superb estate ! In other words the grapes were still on the vine as recently as January!!? No! Yes. Shows what can be done when you know exactly what you are doing. When you get to my age the one thing you don’t want to be doing is waiting for wine to get ready for you to drink—I am interested in NOW and this is the wine to do it.

Thys Louw

According to Thys Louw, Diemersdal’s owner-winemaker, the early release is driven by the market. “As owners of an established brand, Diemersdal is in a fortunate position to each year have customers clamouring for our Sauvignon Blanc from the new vintage,” he says. “This, as well as the quality of this year’s grapes being conducive to a quick ferment and a short stay to settle in tank, has allowed us to come out with one of the Cape’s first Sauvignon Blancs from the 2022 vintage.”

The tasting area at Diemersdal

Diemersdal’s Sauvignon Blanc harvesters hit the vineyards at the end of January, and the early grapes showed brisk acidity and assertive varietal character, with the balanced chemistry allowing for wine that was ready for bottling this past week. The first wines exude zest and freshness along with delectable tropical notes of gooseberry and passion-fruit.
