Historic Diemersdal

Competition is good; it is part of the human condition to excel and to be measured against one’s peers. Having said that, SA has some highly thought of wine competitions, but there are competitions, and there are competitions. We have one which will remain nameless in which over 1000 wines are awarded some kind of medal EACH YEAR. The saying goes—to paraphrase Liza Minelli “If you can’t get one there, you can’t get one anywhere.” However, the Old Mutual Wine Trophy competition is probably the granddaddy of them all — to be recognised there is SOMETHING. This is the 20th year it has been held–a great contribution to the wijne industry.

This year that brilliant Durbanville Sauvignon Blanc estate known from here to New Zealand, Diemersdal, was crowned Best Producer at Old Mutual, winning the Trophy for Best Pinotage for their Pinotage Reserve 2019 and Gold Medals for the Private Collection Bordeaux Blend 2017 and The Journal Cabernet Sauvignon 2018.  All of these, being red wines, prove that sixth generation owner/ winemaker Thys Louw, knows his oats, if you will excuse the expression, when it comes to making wine. His Sauvignon Blancs win awards all over the place and are spectacular, coming from a region that is renowned for Sauvignon Blanc wine. Some 32 Gold Medals and 11 Trophies were awarded at this year’s show which is noted for its strict and meticulous judging. Thys modestly pays tribute to his team without which nothing would work and special tribute to the fruit from this 323 year old farm. He says” To be named Best Producer is extraordinarily rewarding. It is a huge honour and the kind of recognition that every wine farm hopes to achieve someday. “ Long may the great wine keep flowing from here—once we can get our hands on it!!
