Is it just me or do other people also feel as if we are emerging—albeit at snail’s pace—from a bizarre period –one where we could not go out? Now we can– and the feeling is one of liberation, almost exploratory. One place I really missed was the Kalk Bay coast and Simonstown—but more of that next week. This week it was somewhere closer, the iconic Constantia Valley –home of so many of our favourite places to hang out. A trip to Constantia Glen got rid of some of the angst of lockdown.
Here the great wines of Justin van Wyk are the perfect counterfoil for some delicious things to nosh. Their platters of charcuterie and cheese are perfect to share and their famous wood fired Flammkuchen—think pizza, Austrian style– are great winter warmers and here they are perfectly made.. Austrian beef ghoulash with Spätzle is mouth-watering, rich and perfect with one of their reds. The views are breath-taking –an added bonus, and the feeling of being on another planet most satisfying. Try their delicious new Saddle Rosé which is only available at the tasting room, creamy and moreish.
