What a setting!

There is a small part of Italy, an enchanting part, transplanted to the sweeping grandeur of the African landscape close to Paarl and Wellington on the slopes of the Paardeberg Mountains. This, of course, brings immediately to mind the famous words of Isak Dinesen “I had a farm in Africa”, except this one does not grow coffee and it’s right here in our own backyard.

Delicious cooking

This small piece of paradise not only makes delicious wines using Italian varietals but has an enticing Farm Kitchen where one can indulge in some delicious Italian cooking which includes some of their homegrown artichokes.

If it all gets a bit too much for you, or even if it doesn’t, and you just want to get away from it all, there is a charming guest house and swimming pool, not that you will be doing much of that at this time of the year, overlooking the magnificent countryside around you.

The country at its best

The word Ayama one would think is Italian, I mean it sounds Italian, but no, it’s a Xhosa word which means “someone to lean on.”

Olde World comfort

The farm belongs to two Italian families from the Friuli region in Italy near Venice and is run by a charming couple of real Italians, Giuseppe Di Benedetto and Chiara Fabietti, who have worked in wine and hospitality in many parts of the world and run a smooth “molto simpatico” ship, the kind I like.

Relax in style

Chiara is the winemaker, and does she know what she’s talking about! And Giuseppe is the charmingly effusive front of house and marketing manager of the whole setup –the perfect team.

Giuseppe and Chiara

There are plenty of events to keep you busy from Pasta Making Classes, Italian Festivals and Artichoke picking days which are very popular for all those who want to live authentic country experiences. I like just relaxing and soaking it all up.

Perfect hot tub

The farm is open to the public seven days a week so get into their website and see what’s available, you will love it. More news about the wines a bit later on in Magic Grape Tours
