If you want to eat Italian, and who doesn’t every now and then, the top Italian restaurants in Cape Town were recently nominated by those clever people at Gamberro Rosso. They were in town to introduce us to some of the spectacular wines available from Italy on their international roadshow. The event was very well attended, and some superb wines were had. At the end of the evening, they revealed what they thought were the top Italian restaurants in the city. Of course, there might be one or two you would know as well, but these kinds of lists are always subjective.

A legend

Think superb steak tartare, think brilliant carpaccios, either fish or meat, think superb pastas, lasagnes, seafood, and spectacular desserts. I have eaten at most of these restaurants and can vouch for them personally but don’t take my word for it, get there yourself and try them and see what I mean.

The restaurants were in no particular order

Il Leone Mastrantonio, the best carpaccios in town and a superb wine list,

Carpaccio di manzo at Il Leone

95 at Parks where the legendary Georgia Nava reigns supreme,

Scala in the city centre where the steak tartare is superb, as are the marinated sardines with anchovy emulsion.
