St. George’s Mall is a vehicle free Mall in the centre of the city of Cape Town which runs from Saint George’s Cathedral in Wale St all the way down to Strand St. It is lined with various kinds of businesses and has interesting outlets carrying various African motif items which appeal to tourists. Towards the bottom end you will find a charming, slightly off beat hotel called Gorgeous George which has a charming rooftop restaurant called Gigi.

Comfortable in its own space

In this eclectic space, tables are spaced so that conversation and fascinating tete a tetes are the order of the day. The room is glassed over and open to the sky with views of surrounding buildings.

An indoor forest

It is hung with plenty of green plants and the whole effect is almost like dining in a secluded glass menagerie in a forest of one’s own. The cuisine tends to the slightly exotic with different French accents – delicious and well served by an attentive staff. The experience is slightly off beat and appeals very much to the cosmopolitan Capetonians. I was taken there last week by a close friend of mine who very kindly footed the bill which can be, depending on what you order, slightly scary. It is not eat your heart out stuff but definitely on the top end of the scale. This is a place for special occasions with somebody very special in your life  or with somebody you would like to impress. I WAS impressed!

Perfect surrounding

My host ordered the sesame tofu salad which came with a root leaf and peanut salad and a ginger soy dressing –totally delicious— with very crunchy tofu deep fried.

Crispy tofu

I had the line caught game fish tartare, which that day was tuna, absolutely superb, served with avocado, radish and the most delicious piquant dressing.

Tuna tartare

We both decided to have steaks as it was one of those perfect autumn days which we get in Cape Town with the sun shining but a cool breeze. He had the beef rib eye served with a red wine jus and peppercorn sauce and I had the beef fillet served with the most gorgeous Bearnaise source obviously made right there as you can see from the picture.

Superb fillet and bearnaise

The sides offered were organic green beans with toasted almonds and coconut creamed grilled mielies with crispy onions, chilli and lime— totally irresistible. The wine list is more than sufficient with some very serious contenders like the Kluver unwooded Chardonnay which was superb. The service was snappy, the company was perfect, and all in all it is a superb place to go.

It closes at 11:00 PM so summer evenings will be fabulous– the phone number is 021 612 0999 and the address is 118 St. Georges Mall. Park in Mandela Rhodes place just around the corner in Burg St. Get there and see for yourself what I’m talking about cheers
