Evolving out of Steenberg’s original Reserve Sauvignon Blanc first produced in 1997, Steenberg The Black Swan Sauvignon Blanc has grown in stature as a cool climate flagship wine, showing remarkable ageability and sense of place. The wine takes its name from Zwaanswyk , the original name of Steenberg, when it belonged to the iconic Catharina Ras, in the early 18th Century.
The new 2020 release, the maiden vintage of accomplished Cellarmaster Elunda Basson, displays timeless elegance and craftsmanship in spades.Since joining Steenberg Vineyards in June 2019, Elunda has set her sights on securing Steenberg’s rightful place as a producer of top tier Sauvignon Blanc.
“For me, Sauvignon Blanc is the most challenging, but most rewarding variety to work with as it is so expressive of terroir, but also versatile in terms of fruit profile and style. This means that each vintage expresses its own uniqueness so evident in The Black Swan Sauvignon Blanc,” says Elunda.
The wine is full in the mouth, smooth and refined with an appealing complexity. There is an edgy acidity which supports all that delicious fruit, making it superbly well balanced. Plenty of citrus notes and stone fruit nuances make it perfect for food like fish and roast chicken—keep it simple. Steenberg says the wine can go the distance for up to 20 years from vintage with careful cellaring in the true tradition of an exceptional cool climate Sauvignon Blanc. Of course, if, .like me, you don’t want to wait 20 years, the wine is fabulous right now.
