A great place to be any weekend if you are in Cape Town is the Elgin Railway Market, situated, guess where, at the old Elgin Railway Station, within an old apple warehouse.

The famous station
It is Just quirky enough to appeal to the offbeat and great fun for families.

Quirky lizards
Here you will find plenty of places to eat–do not think fancy or Haute–, fascinating stalls selling lamps, books, jewellery–get the picture?

Plenty to eat
All of it nice and busy, with local craft very much on display.

Very offbeat
Being a famous wine area, do not miss sampling some of the local wines at Elgin Wine Tours. Saves driving from farm to farm with all the labels represented in one space, a good idea.

Elgin Wine Tours
This is a perfect place to unwind –a valley at the top of a mountain–very different. The Ceres Rail Company run a steam train from Cape Town on weekends which is a great way to get there. When the train arrives a-whistling and shooting off plenty of steam it is greeted by visitors like a star arriving–great fun.

The train
Driving there is easy, as you go through Somerset West, up the Sr Lowry’s Pass and voila you are there.

Great space
If you haven’t been, now is the time. Fire up the Land Rover and get going.
