Boplaas Family Vineyards is back in the limelight for the outstanding quality of its wines after being named one of the top producers at the authoritative National Wine Challenge. For receiving Double Platinum at the show, no less than two of its wines have been included in the hotly-contested list of Top 100 SA Wines this year.

The Boplaas Colheita Cape Tawny 2005 is a dated tawny, meaning from a single harvest.  A true testament to patience and craftsmanship, the port was made from a selection of Tinta Barocca and Touriga Nacional grapes. It was aged for 16 years in old Portuguese Pipes before being bottled.  Only 3 600 bottles were ever produced.

In his notes on the wine, patriarch Carel Nelsays, “The lusciously complex fortified wine with its amber colour, heady aromatics and nutty flavour profile, offers those lucky enough to broach a bottle or two to taste a rare and fine example of Boplaas Cape Tawny!” R750

The Boplaas Gamka Red 2020 is a blend of the Portuguese varieties Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca, Touriga Franca and Souzão. It was aged for 12 months in new and second-fill French oak barrels. The wine itself has an abundance of aromas of black hedgerow fruit, tart cranberry, ripe plum notes, spice and fynbos, while rolling onto the palate and into a long finish.R235

Over the years Van Loveren has grown to become South Africa’s leading family-owned winery, known for their consistency as well as their award-winning wines, with the latest recognition at 2022 National Wine Challenge (NWC). The NWC, which incorporates the Top 100 SA Wines, is the premier fine-wine-only competition in South Africa. Scooping no less than seven Double Platinum, 11 Double Gold and nine Double Silver Awards. The Double Platinum recipients also secured a spot on the prestigious Top 100 SA Wines list.

Bonnievale Wines went platinum at South Africa’s premier, fine-wine-only competition with two of its wines earning top honours this year. Their Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 was awarded Double Platinum and crowned as one of the Top 100 SA Wines. The Limited Release Chardonnay 2021 claimed Double Gold. The Cabernet Sauvignon is fermented in small batches and in French, American and European oak. Further fermentation takes place in these barrels for a period of 18 to 21 months, followed by an additional six months of bottle maturation prior to release. On the nose are notes of pure red fruit, notably raspberry, and supported by alluring hints of liquorice. The juicy palate provides structure and depth to the wine. R155

The Chardonnay opens with aromas of lime and grapefruit on the nose. The crisp and fresh palate shows the slightest hint of oak having spent seven months in French oak, with a delicious round mouthfeel. The finish is long and satisfying, the result of regular stirring of the lees. R101
