Perfect setting

Cosy inside

If there is one place that few Capetonians can pass without going into it is Joostenberg on the way to Stellenbosch. Here you will find one of the best delis in the Cape, a famous butcher specialising in pork products, a delightful country restaurant and even a winery with some excellent wines that will not burn a hole in your budget. Sit outside on the veranda when the weather is good or seek shelter in the cool interior when the fierce summer sun gets too much for those of us who ask plaintively “Why did we ever leave Europe?” when things get too hot. Kids love it and play around contentedly on the large grassy areas under the watchful eyes of their parents.

Confit pig’s cheek salad

Delicious Quiche Lorraine

The winning dish here is any one featuring their fabulous charcuterie. The starter platter with pork rillettes, chicken liver paté, and various cold pork cuts, served with tangy pickles and crunchy farm baked bread and butter is irresistible. Add a glass of Tyrrell Myburgh’s wine for a moment in eating heaven. Maybe you would prefer something more substantial like pork bangers with apple mash? Superbly light individual Quiche Lorraines also make a delicious way to start. Warm confit pig’s cheek salad with piccalilli vegetables and horseradish is a masterpiece of tastes and textures.  if all that pork is getting to you, go for the fabulously substantial hamburger or go for broke with a pan fried Greenfields hand reared rump steak with potato gratin  dauphinois, red wine and black pepper sauce and a side salad—again heaven. Leave space for the best crème caramel this side of France or the magnificent raspberry crème brûlée—sensational.

After your meal wander through the deli and take home things to prolong the moment. Take my advice and do NOT go before your meal or you will definitely overspend.
