Argentinian prawns

Shortly before Christmas we were introduced to a delightful little gem of a place in the middle of the city by our friend Neil Pendock. It’s on Church Square and is called Pilcrow and Cleaver. The menu changes weekly depending on what is available and what fires the chef’s imagination. The doors open onto Church Square and the wandering hoi polloi is interesting but the food is what is driving fans there.

There are small plates with things like seared scallops flashed in Loch Lomond 12 year old whisky or heavenly shredded turkey and pork ravioli with orange cherry and bitters dressing. These are great to get the appetite buds up and running. Once there try something  bigger like Angus brisket cooked in Hey Joe cherry beer with rainbow carrots, Hasselback duck fat potatoes or fabulous Norwegian Salmon Wellington with wild mushroom duxelles served with onion puree and baby beets. If that isn’t enough go for broke with Argentinian prawns with sweetcorn and sage. Finish off with a delicious and rich chocolate trifle.  Once this mad time is over try two great wines they have—Portuguese—Maria Saudade, fresh and off dry, delicious, or Botavelha from the Douro Valley –a smooth as silk red blend ,  superb.
