The valley lies before you

Takuan and Achim von Arnim in situ

Haute Cabrière in Franschhoek is a one stop pleasure destination. First of all you have one of the most spectacular views in all of South Africa, an unbroken vista of the magnificent Franschhoek Valley, breath-taking, really, in an area full of superlatives. The tasting area overlooks an enormous cellar in which the famous wines of the estate lie maturing in barrels, very European.  Though they are famed for their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines and, of course, for their unrivalled Cap Classiques under the Pierre Jourdan label, the subject of many a sabrage occasion, do try the Ratafia if you haven’t before, a delicious fortified aperitif, to open up those languid taste buds. The third string in their bow is the excellent restaurant under the control of Chef Nic van Wyk.

Spectacular view from the restaurant

Long the home of the Von Arnim family with legendary Dad, Achim, his gentle wife Hildegard, and with son Takuan now in charge of the winemaking side of things, Haute Cabrière maintains its place as a founder of this wine area. A visit here will satisfy all of the senses—and include one I have invented for myself—inner satisfaction.

Rare vertical Pinot Noir offer

As we head towards Father’s Day the estate is offering, for on-line sales only, a six bottle case of their famous Pinot Noirs from vertical 2015, 2016, and 2017 vintages at a very special price of R1410, a fitting tribute for the man in your life who knows a fantastic wine when he sees it. Make sure you book ahead for the restaurant or you might be disappointed.
