Classic egg shape signifies rebirth

One of the most interesting places to taste and experience wine has always been the Jonker estate, Welteverede, in the Breede River Valley. Today this award winning destination has upped the ante and now provides visitors with a unique set of tours that highlight the wines that have made them world famous—Chardonnay and Cap Classique. The tours are fascinating and will leave one with a superb sense of what makes the estate tick.

Converted cellar packed with character

Says Philip Jonker, fourth generation winemaker-proprietor. “Our wines should have personality dictated by the soil. It should have a sense of place. “These tours do just that.

Unique wine tasting experience

Today visitors are guided through the underground network of cave-like cellars that used to hold the wine as it matured. . Candles and muted lighting retain the hallowed ambience.

Beautiful lounge

Each underground tour takes two hours to complete and includes wine tasting. Create Cap Classique includes a unique interactive experience where visitors can disgorge, dosage, cork, foil and label their own Cap Classique bottle. Tours may be taken consecutively.

How’s that for an entrance?

Old vines preserved since the days of Weltevrede’s founders have been replanted on pedestals alongside the rose garden to reflect heritage. There are many more that await.

Take home your own bubbly.
