Great wine
If you haven’t been to Durbanville lately, and especially to the classic Meerendal Wine Estate, now is the time to fire up the Benz and get there. Those clever people have opened a great new restaurant there called La Romantica and, as you can imagine, it is Italian, and Italian with a vengeance.

The pizzas are spectacular, and they have gluten free versions available as well, crisp, delicious made with great devotion, the way I like it.

Chicken parmigiana was absolutely fragrant with grated parmesan, and the pan-fried calamari starter was perfection.
Spaghetti de luxe
The carbonara spaghetti could have come straight from Napoli and the homemade bread with dipping olive oil was heavenly. Perfect food for the superb Meerendal wines.
Salmon Italian style
The gnocchi Italiana and the mushroom risotto were mouth-wateringly good, and to top it all, the creme brulée was a delicious, pinched from the French, ending. Of course, I didn’t eat all that food, even though I would love to have done so, but tasted everything, and had to be restrained from finishing all of it. The service is smooth and friendly from a dedicated young crowd.

The large room is always abuzz with conversation but if you would like it quieter, try eating outside on the terrace overlooking those famous vineyards.
