I often say “if you are ever in such and such a place, do make sure you go to so and so for a meal and spoil yourself.”

However today I am forced to say “Do get to Hermanus as soon as you are able. Make sure you stay overnight somewhere nice and head to Fick’s Pool for sundowners and the most delicious Basque style tapas which they call pinchos—a “pinch” get it?”

How about the setting??!!

Two things to note — they are only open during the summer months, that is from September to May , and even though there is a wheelchair ramp the situation is somewhat precipitous –about 40 steps down to the site.

Steps to the cove–there is also a wheelchair ramp

Having said that, there’s absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t make this one of those must-get-to places. The restaurant is set at the edge of the sea in a small Cove ringed by rocky cliffs.

A perfect sunset

The waves coming into the Cove are wonderful, bringing you as close to the sea as you can get without actually being in it.

The service is impeccable and the wine list adequate. They also specialise in imaginative cocktails featuring some exotic ingredients.

Great patatas bravas

In addition to various meat, fish, and vegetable small plates, they make generously sized Austrian Flammkuchen with a multitude of toppings. These can easily be shared and are delicious with things like Buffalo mozzarella and chorizo.

Lamb meatballs

The pinchos to watch out for are the ones with spicy lamb meatballs, seared duck breast, chimichurri fillet and, my favourite, smoked salmon trout with egg and anchovies –yum

Also to be had are flash fried calamari, delicious cauliflower with romesco sauce, and superb patatas bravas.

Fillet steak with chimmichuri

Desserts feature rich San Sebastian cheesecake with a fluffy custard centre, and, of course, churros with chocolate dip. You will not go hungry and will have had an occasion to remember. Take friends or someone special—life is short, eat the cake.
