Nostos means homecoming in Greek and, after the long drive from our side of town, it certainly felt that way on Sunday. This very popular restaurant in Hout Bay was the scene of a friend’s birthday and there were twenty guests, most of us Graecophiles, so it’s not as if the cuisine was strange to us.

Cosy interior
The place does not have to try to be very Greek as it’s not really what one would call a tourist trap. On the contrary, it appeals to the locals, many of whom have travelled to Greece, and to people who are new to it. It is run by a couple who obviously know what they are doing and have considered Nostos to be THEIR homecoming.

Take friends
While there is seating outside, we were seated inside owing to the cool weather which we are having. The menu is expansive and appeals to all Greek tastes and beyond.

Delicious dips
Starters are things like tzatziki, taramasalata, grilled aubergines with lemon and yoghurt, delicious meatballs, moussaka croquettes finished with creamy bechamel sauce and cheese.

Irresistible
We went on to prawns with smokey garlic butter, excellent chicken souvlaki and grilled calamari tubes and tentacles with very good rustic fries.

Very Greek
The wine list has some very good, heavily priced specials and corkage is 70 Rand, so make up your own mind on what you’re going to do as far as that’s concerned.

Excellent fried starters
The service was adequate but do remember you are in Hout Bay, and nobody likes to be rushed. So, undo your belt a bit, relax, unwind, and have another glass of wine.
