Ox tail jardiniere

Going to Vergelegen is a very special occasion always. Not only is it a comfortable drive into the country but the place itself exudes a special kind of magic. Very much a world on its own, this place has been a destination much sought after for more than 300 years. Many of the international guests who flock there have no idea how to pronounce the name, but they all know where they are going and what they are looking for.

Slightly off beat very French

The restaurant which was Camphors  has been beautifully re decorated in the French manner and is now a light and elegant country restaurant, very much the kind of thing you find in the elegant French countryside.

Franch elegance in the country

The food, all French, is under the accomplished hand of chef Michelle Barry. Obviously, the wine is perfect for pairing with this kind of food and the best of the Vergelegen vintages are on hand. The service is smooth and friendly and if the weather is good, sitting outside on the terrace overlooking the lawns and ancient trees is a pure delight

Tres Francaise

We started with a delicious herb and cheese souffle cleverly matched with crisp apple matches, and a Nicoise prawn salad which managed to turn the loss of the anchovies into an advantage. Mains were a magnificent roast lack of lamb with a herb and Madagascan peppercorn crust, which was served with potatoes Anna and superb lamb jus —superb even for someone like me who normally does not eat lamb.

Superb rack of lamb

The boeuf bourguignon made with slow roast beef short rib looked wonderful but I settled for the slow roast confit duck served with a Grand Marnier and orange jus– quite spectacular. The poached prawns on the kingklip fillet served with a light velouté sauce looked sensational, but one can only do so much—true?

Fabulous creme caramel

For desserts we chose the galette with caramelised apples, served with a creme brulée cream— perfect in the French manner. The other was the Paris Brest — the choux ring filled with the delicious praline cream –heaven..

Well, what more could one want on a lazy perfect Spring afternoon in the country?
